We have already managed to implement a considerable number of strategies and activities that will strengthen our work with CSR, but we intend to work continuously at being even better. There are always new challenges, we will never be finished, but we will do our best to keep up. We are focussed on key areas of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy as further described.
Clean water and sanitation
Groundwater is an important source for our drinking water. Although most of our groundwater supplies are clean, they are, due to human neglect and carelessness, vulnerable and threatened.
We have implemented a range of initiatives to ensure that we are not adding to the pollution of our vulnerable resources. Some of our initiatives are:
- Environment-friendly cleaning products only: No damaging chemicals are leaving the hotel through the sewers.
- Posters in every room encouraging guests to use water from the tap instead of buying it.
- Certified environment-friendly laundry service.
- H20 neutralized water for window cleaning.
- Water-saving toilets, taps and showers.
Responsible consumption and production
We love nature and all the good it brings to us. Therefore we strive to leave as few environmental footprints behind us as we can. Here is a list of some of the initiatives we have taken in 2020 alone (unsorted order):
- Waste separation
- Part of the initiative ‘TooGoodToGo’ to fight food waste
- Plastic bottles, wrapping, bags, etc. made from degradable and reusable materials
- Environment-friendly printing facilities
- Honey from our own hives.
- Using real glass instead of plastic glass in rooms.
Climate action
We are constantly trying to rethink the way we do business with the aim of creating a greener future. Something completely unique for the hotel industry is that thousands of people pass through our rooms and premises every year. So we thought: 'What if we could inspire them to act towards a greener future?' That's why we came up with the idea: 'Greenthink'. Greenthink is a small leaflet that is placed in each room. It contains a counter-argument to the argument 'my small climate effort is of no use in the big picture anyway'. For example; why take your bike to work instead of your car? Of course there are the obvious advantages such as it being an easy, cheap, efficient and healthy form of transport. But Denmark has become a role model for many countries around the world, including China. China is now working hard to adapt their infrastructure in big cities to cyclists. We live in a digital era, and what we do can actually reach the other side of the globe, where the impact may be even greater! You can read the full leaflet here.
Partnerships for action
Fortunately, we are not alone in our efforts to make the world a slightly better place for everyone. We work together with the Danish maritime welfare organization, Sømandsmissionen. Sømandsmissionen is present in large parts of the maritime environments of Denmark and Greenland with a helping hand to those who may need it. It can either be a practical task for the Filipino sailor, or just a good conversation about the things that are rarely talked about, but that we all carry.
